Synopsis :
L'histoire de deux orphelins recueillis par une même famille et grandissant ensemble. Bien que restant de proches amis, les garçons vont suivre des chemins radicalement différents. D'une part, le studieux Jim Wade, qui obtient son diplôme de droit et devient procureur puis gouverneur de l'Etat de New York. De l'autre Blackie Gallagher, un joyeux gamin qui aime les jeux d'argent et devient propriétaire d'un casino illégal en corrompant les flics. Restant proches malgré leurs différences, leurs ambitions opposées ne peuvent qu'irrémédiablement tourner au drame…
